Introducing iOS 9

Introducing iOS 9

Apple announced their latest mobile operating system, iOS 9, on Monday at their annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). iOS 9 contains improvements and new features with applications, search and Siri improvements. While it won’t be available until this Fall, here’s a sneak peek of what’s to come.

News App

Apple will include an all-new app with iOS 9 called “News.” News curates stories from all your favorite sources automatically, giving you beautiful articles including rich text, photos, embedded videos and stunning animations. It learns which stories you prefer to read as you use it, delivering captivating articles tailored just for you.

Improvements to Notes

Notes now supports text formatting, handwriting, photos, lists and much more. You can even share links from other applications directly to Notes as attachments. Notes has evolved to become a bit more like Evernote, a popular third-party replacement.

Improvements to Maps

Maps now includes transit options built in, so you’ll never miss a plane, bus or train again. The app will even provide turn-by-turn directions on foot, right to the station door. Maps also includes a list of popular destinations nearby, sorted by category. For example, tap “Restaurants” or “Fast Food” to see the most popular locations close to you, along with ratings, reviews, hours and more.

Wallet App & Apple Pay Enhancements

Apple Wallet app

Apple has rebranded “Passbook” as “Wallet” and the new app enhances Apple Pay to allow new types of cards, like store credit or loyalty cards. This means you can earn points at places like Kohl’s, JC Penny, Panera, Walgreens and many more - right from your phone. Another new feature is the ability to double-click from the lockscreen to launch Wallet without having to unlock and tap on the app. Of course, your fingerprint is still required to pay.

Multitasking

Apple announced all new multitasking features, including split-screen apps for iPad Air 2. We cover all the new multitasking features here.

Quicktype

iOS 9 for iPad now includes intuitive shortcuts like cut, copy, paste, attatchments and formatting - right from the top bar of the keyboard. You can now use two fingers on the keyboard to move the curso and even select text. Lastly, keyboard shortcuts now work for Bluetooth keyboards linked to iPad. Simply hold a modifier key (Command, Option, Shift, etc.) to display a list of possible shortcuts on screen. Apple also introduced the Command-Tab shortcut to enable quick switching between apps on iPad.

Smarter Siri

Siri can now remind you about things you’re working on in apps. For example, start drafting an email and say “Siri, remind me to finish this when I get home.” Siri will set a reminder with a link to the draft as soon as you get home. She can also search for specific things, like “Videos I took at Ramy’s birthday party.”

Smarter Search

Siri also powers the improved search bar on iPhone and iPad. Now, you can get scores, stock prices, weather, calculations, quick connections and more - directly from search. Third-party developers can embed their content into searches now as well, so you can search for information inside any app.

The search bar now displays useful information below it, to give you what you need before you type a single letter. This includes relevant people, suggested apps, places nearby and news articles. When you tap on a result in search, a “back to search” button appears in the top left corner of the screen, allowing you to navigate back and forth between the search function and the content it provides.

Proactive Assistant

iOS 9 analyzes which apps you commonly use at certain times to make customized suggestions throughout the day. For example, plug in headphones or connect to Bluetooth speakers and iOS 9 automatically opens your favorite playlist. It suggests who might be calling from an unknown number based on your emails. It will even analyze your calendar events and remind you when it’s time to leave based on traffic conditions.

Improved Performance

Security in iOS 9

Better Battery Life

Apple has made efforts to trim battery usage across the entire operating system, providing approximately 1 hour of additional battery life for your device. Ambient light & proximity sensors detect when the phone is face-down on the table and prevent the screen from turning on when you receive a notification. An all-new Low Power mode lets you extend your battery life even further when you need it the most.

Smaller Update Size

Updating to iOS 9 only requires 1.3GB instead of 4.58GB, so you’ll be able to get the latest OS even if you’re low on storage space.

Apple's Metal Technology

Apps now use Apple’s Metal technology to provide smoother, faster animations, better performance and quicker rendering.

Improved Security

TouchID devices now require a 6-digit passcode rather than 4, making them much harder to crack. Two-factor authentication is also enabled automatically for every AppleID.

Android Migration

Apple launched a new app that allows Android users to easily and securely transfer contacts, message history, camera photos and videos, web bookmarks, mail accounts, calendars, wallpaper and DRM-free songs and books. It will even suggest downloads of any free apps you had on Android and add paid apps to your wishlist.

iOS 9 is a huge step forward for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users. While the free update won’t be available until the Fall, a public beta will be launched in July. iOS 9 is compatible with every device that can support iOS 8.
