Why the iPhone 6s Camera is the Best Ever

The iSight Camera of the iPhone has always produced high-quality images for millions of users around the world. The iSight Camera of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus is the best camera Apple has ever put in one of their devices. Here is what makes the iPhone 6s camera better than any we've seen before.

More Megapixels and Deep Trench Isolation

For the first time ever, the iPhone 6s features a 12-megapixel sensor that can capture higher resolution photos without degrading image quality. Usually, increasing the number of megapixels in a mobile phone camera leads to a lower image quality due to color bleeding. Apple solved this issue with a new camera technology called Deep Trench Isolation.

Deep Trench Isolation

Each pixel inside your iPhone’s camera houses a photodiode that captures light (photons) and exports it as an electrical charge. Because these sensors are so tiny and in such close quarters, the photons will bleed into surrounding diodes, causing pixelation, discoloration and noise. To counteract the light bleeding, Apple engineers found a way to etch trenches (hence the name Deep Trench Isolation) between each photodiode, filling each one with insulating material that prevents leakage.

On top of preventing leaks between photodiodes, the new iSight camera has improved local tone-mapping and improved noise reduction. It takes better photos all around, even in low light.

Sapphire Crystal Lens Cover

The iPhone 6s camera is covered by a Sapphire crystal glass, an extremely scratch resistant material that Apple also uses in their TouchID sensors and on certain Apple Watch models. Now, your precious camera is less likely to get scratched, so the picture will always be crystal clear.

5MP FaceTime HD Camera with Retina Flash

Apple also upped the number of megapixels on the forward-facing FaceTime HD Camera, giving it a 5MP sensor - a huge increase over the 1.2MP. This means selfies and FaceTime conversations will now be much higher quality. With Retina Flash, your iPhone's screen becomes a flash for selfies. The entire screen will eminate a bright flash, making your selfies look better than ever.

4K Video

Shooting 4k Video on iPhone 6s

That’s right, the iPhone 6s can now shoot in 4K at 30fps. Beware that 4K files are huge. They will take up about 1GB of space for every 2.5 minutes of video. 4K is not an option within the Camera app itself. If you want to shoot in 4K, you can change the video resolution in Settings > Photos & Camera > Record Video.

Optical Image Stabilization (iPhone 6s Plus Only)

If you opted for the iPhone 6s Plus, you’ll enjoy optical image stabilization. While the iPhone has always had fantastic digital stabilization, the iPhone 6s Plus camera lens physically adjusts to counteract your shaky hands, resulting in clearer, more-focused photos and videos.

Live Photos

The iPhone 6s also includes a new feature called Live Photos. When enabled, Live Photos captures 1.5 seconds of video before and after your photo and saves it into one combined file. As you scroll through your photos, the live photos “come to life” by moving ever so slightly and pausing at the point you took the photo. You can also 3D touch to view the entire photo.

Live Photos Settings in Camera App

To enable Live Photos, open your Camera app and tap the icon with three concentric circles. It will be yellow when live photos is enabled, and white when off.

The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will allow you to take better photos than ever before. Which of these new camera features are you most excited about? Let us know in the comments below!
